Laguna Beach Honeymoon Session | Carmen & Steve
November 10, 2018
Laguna Beach Honeymoon Session
Honeymoon photoshoots are a sort of amalgamation of an engagement shoot and a wedding shoot. Because a lot of people travel through Los Angeles on their way to honeymoon destinations (or stop here for their honeymoon!) these sessions aren’t uncommon for us. It’s a great experience to photograph couples after wedding planning stresses are behind them. We love being their last stop before they start their shared lives as a married couple! I was out of town shooting another wedding, so Allen handled this shoot solo. Here’s what he had to say about Carmen and Steve’s Laguna Beach honeymoon session.
Carmen and Steve were so sweet and gentle with one another, as you can see in each of their photos. I love the way their smiles light up their whole faces! It’s clear honeymooning is a really good look for them. And the look only got better at their Laguna Beach honeymoon photo shoot!
The couple met through mutual friends, and have been together for a total of four years (Steve proposed when they’d been dating about two years and six months). His proposal was also at a beach, but this one was in Florida! Steve popped the question at Siesta Key Beach in July of 2017. As native Floridians, it was great to connect with a couple who had spent time there and had fond memories of our home state!
Carmen and Steve got married in October 2018 in Maryland, surrounded by many of their family and friends. It sounds like it was an awesome wedding, and I was so happy to get to finish off their wedding chapter with this Laguna Beach honeymoon session! Their stop in LA was to see a friend in Ventura, but they also decided to get photos done while they were out here.
Our original plan to photograph Carmen and Steve was to take them to Malibu. Megan and I have done tons of sessions there and the beaches are truly iconic California sights. But by the time Carmen and Steve were in LA, California was facing some of the worst wildfires the state has ever seen. Because of this, Malibu was no longer a possible shooting site.
I had to improvise. Luckily, my background is in acting, so this was no problem! I turned it into a Laguna Beach honeymoon session in no time! (It also probably didn’t hurt that Megan and I have been shooting out here for a while now and know the greater southern California area pretty well. But I’d like to attribute most of my success to my acting talent.)
Carmen and Steve wanted to get a location in addition to the seaside, so we started out at a park to show off California foliage. This was for their more formal outfits, which worked out great. Initially, Carmen and Steve relied a little more on my guidance when it came to selecting poses and what to do. But as we got to know each other, they relaxed and got creative. By the time we made it to Laguna Beach, they were suggesting their own poses and trying different things! Their more casual vibe in those photos really showcases how much fun the three of us had together. We had a great time exploring since neither Carmen nor Steve had been to Orange County before.
There’s a photo that I took in the park of Carmen and Steve kissing. This was pretty early on in our shoot, and since Carmen and Steve live in Maryland, we hadn’t gotten to know each other very well yet. I suggested Steve grab Carmen and kiss her like he’s never kissed her before and like he’s planning on kissing her for the rest of their lives! It made them both laugh, and the
passionate kiss photo turned out beautifully. That’s the moment I felt like we really connected as photographer and subjects. The rest of the photos really speak to that!
